My Top 10 Steps I Took To Prevent My Home From Being Burglarized Again.

I spent days researching ways to prevent my house from being burglarized again.  Here is my top 10 list of the steps that I wish I had done prior to being burglarized.  I made a link for all the type products I purchased.  I wish I had this while I was doing my search it would have saved me hours of research time and shopping time.   Link to Items I Purchased

1. Installed a security alarm system with motion detection.

This was a simple step I took but had a big impact on the my family's feeling of being secure in our own home again. I think if my home would have had the security system before the burglary they would have went to another home.  Check out the link for some of the security systems sold on amazon.  Link to Security Cameras

2. Adopted a loud barking dog who became part of the family.

When the police came to our house they told us one of the reasons my next door neighbor did not get robbed was because when they went over there they themselves were visited by a lab dog who would not stop barking.  The burglar was trying to break into their back door since the lock was all scratched up. But the cops said dog was very loud noise which probably deterred the burglars from coming into their home. The police told us that noisy dogs and bright lights were things that burglars generally did not like.

3. Installed an additional window locks.

The window lock on a standard residential window can easily be popped with a screwdriver. I experienced the weakness of the window lock firsthand. For a few dollars I might have been able to prevent my family from being a victim.  The link includes some of the window locks you can buy.  Link to window locks

4. Removed all patio furniture after use.

The burglar used to chairs from my backyard to prop themselves up to get in up to the window and pop the window lock. It probably took him more time to get on the chair then it took to jig open the window.  I made it way too easy for the burglar to get into my house by leaving the chairs in the back. Yes, it is a hassle for me to bring all the furniture in after a cookout but it is worth it if it makes it harder for a burglar to come in.

5. Reinforced exterior door hinge screws by replacing half inch screws with larger deck screws.

Like many homeowners and apartment dwellers I was under the illusion that the front door was probably one of the more protected doors in the house. While after conducting hours of research I was found out that, like many standard home products, the door screws are no large enough to reach the stud.  I replaced them with deck screws so that the screw is sunk into the stud.  I used 3 inch deck screws and felt the screw sink in when I replaced the strike plate.  Link to Type of Deck Screws

6. Installed larger strike plate and reinforced with deck screws.

The strike plates provided with the door is another item that you can easily upgrade and should help reinforce the door's strength.  Link to Strike Plates

7. Installed security cameras.

I tried to find security cameras that were not huge and awkward looking but functioned well.  The security cameras hooked up to remote access let me check out the house when I am away on business travel.  Link to Security Cameras

8. Installed exterior motion sensor lights.

Prior to being burglarized we did not have any motion lights on the property. Burglars generally do not want to be seen. Illumination would help you spot them coming.  Compared to my neighbors who do not have exterior motion sensor lights, I feel like my house is better lighted and a burglar would want an easier target. Exterior Motion Light Link

9. Installed new deadbolt locks in all exterior doors.

Although the burglar came in through the window there was a chance they stole my spare house keys.  So I replaced each and every lock with a commercial grade deadbolt.Link To Deadbolt Locks

10. Purchased door security bar to reinforce the doors.

After watching numerous videos on YouTube it was easy to see that kicking a door in can be done in a matter of seconds. I found a cool product that helps reinforce a door in the event of a burglar trying to kick it in.  This combined with the deck screws and a larger lock strike should help reinforce the strength of a door.   Link to Door Security Bar
